Hiring a PI vs. Using People Search Websites: What’s the Real Difference?

You paid for a people search report. You got three addresses, two disconnected phone numbers, and an employment listing from six years ago. Now you are back at square one, out $25, and no closer to finding the person you need.

This is not bad luck. It is how these sites work.

What People Search Sites Actually Are

Spokeo, BeenVerified, TruthFinder and the rest are data aggregators. They pull from public records, old directories, marketing databases, and social media and package it into a report that looks official.

The problem is none of it is verified. A bot scraped it, formatted it, and sold it to you. Nobody checked whether that address is current. Nobody confirmed that the phone number still belongs to the right person. Nobody separated your subject from the three other people with the same name in the same state.

You get whatever the algorithm found. Accurate or not.

Why It Falls Apart When It Matters

People search sites are fine if you are casually curious about someone. They fall apart the moment the stakes are real.

If you are trying to serve court papers on someone avoiding service, an old address gets you nowhere. If you are a landlord trying to locate a tenant who disappeared owing rent, a disconnected number is useless. If you need to find someone for child support enforcement, a six-year-old employer listing will not hold up.

Acting on bad information in a legal matter can actually make things worse. You waste time, you tip the person off, or you contact the wrong individual entirely.

What a Licensed Private Investigator Does Differently

A licensed PI is not running the same search you already tried. The difference is access, verification, and human judgment.

Access. Licensed investigators work with professional-grade databases that are not available to the public. These pull from current sources, not archived scrapes. The data is more recent, more complete, and more reliable.

Verification. Every result gets reviewed by a person, not an algorithm. A PI cross-references multiple sources, eliminates false matches, and confirms the information before handing it to you. You are not getting a dump of raw data. You are getting a confirmed, actionable result.

Skip tracing. When someone is actively avoiding being found, standard searches do not work. Licensed investigators use skip tracing techniques to follow the trail a person leaves behind, utility connections, employment records, civil filings, and more. This is the method that finds people who do not want to be found.

Legal compliance. A licensed PI operates under state law and understands exactly what can and cannot be done. That matters when you are building a case, enforcing a court order, or preparing for litigation.

The Practical Difference

Here is what the same search looks like in practice.

You run a people search report on someone who owes you money and stopped responding. You get an address from 2019 and a phone number that rings to nothing. Dead end.

A licensed PI runs a skip trace on the same person. They identify a new utility connection from three months ago, a current employer through a corporate records search, and a verified address. You have what you need to move forward legally.

Same subject. Completely different outcome.

When You Need a PI, Not a Website

▪ You need to serve court papers and the process server came back empty

▪ You are a landlord whose tenant disappeared owing rent ▪ You need to locate someone for child support enforcement

▪ You are an attorney who needs a verified address for litigation

▪ You have tried searching on your own and hit a wall

▪ You need results that will hold up in a legal proceeding

If any of these sound familiar, a people search site is not going to solve your problem. A licensed investigator will.

Why New York Makes This More Complicated

New York has some of the highest population density and mobility in the country. People move constantly between boroughs, between Long Island and the city, and out of state entirely. Address records go stale fast.

Local knowledge matters. An investigator who works New York cases regularly understands how people move, where records are filed, and how to find someone in this specific environment. That is not something a national aggregator can replicate.

The Bottom Line

People search sites sell you data. A licensed private investigator delivers a verified answer.

If the situation is casual, a $25 report might be enough. If the situation involves court, money, family, or legal rights, you need someone who is accountable for the accuracy of what they hand you.
